My Beautiful Island

My beautiful island of Antigua, where I was born and raised. 365 beaches, one for every day of the year. Land of sun and sea that once hold the enslaved. And thank God for emancipation, for we don't have to walk in fear.

Suicide

All that glitter is not gold. Not because someone is displaying happiness doesn't mean all is well. Anyone could be experiencing suicidal thoughts. It doesn't hurt to pay attention to details. If you notice someone is acting different like, over or under sleeping, mood swings, excessive crying for no reason, or eating too much or too little. You might think it is simply stress or puberty, but it could also be depression and could be thinking about killing themselves. Covid-19 have caused depression in people of all ages, so pay attention to the signs. Someone close to you may be hurting; check up on them, show them that you care. You may save a life.

My Body is my Own Business - Naheed Mustafa

This essay was well put together. It shows how passionate the author was about wearing her hijab. I liked that she put the pronouns her before his when she described gender equality. It is also a privilege not to be worried about the beauty standards, as her entire body is covered. I've never discriminated against Muslims, but I've always been curious about their lifestyle. Wonder if the climate affects them, simple stuff like that. However, I am on Naheed Mustafa side; my body is my own business.

Get a knife, get a dog, but get rid of guns - Molly Ivins

I agreed with the author when she said, "Permitting unregulated citizens to have guns is destroying the security of this free state." Guns do kill. Anybody should not be permitted to use such a weapon.  As the author mentioned, there is a second chance when knives are involved. With guns, anyone can get shot and killed, even from a distance. Before reading this, I believed in a firearm for protection, but I never thought about the effects of irresponsible people with no discipline with a gun.

Views on Christianity

Roses are red, Violets are blue. God's blood is shed, Just for you. How do you know that is true? How do you know Christianity is 'right'? I grew up going to church, but now, I am questioning my religion. In the late 15th into the 16th century, before slavery, the Europeans travelled to the Caribbean to wipe the 'uncivilized' culture of the indigenous and taught them Christianity, which was considered civilized. The same group of people who captured Africans brought them to the Caribbean and sold them into slavery. They were kept as slaves and forced to work on plantations for so long. They were colonized and taught Christianity. According to revised history, my ancestors were ill-treated during slavery. How can I trust that what was taught during those times were accurate? I'm not saying that I don't believe in Christ, but I am a little cautious. At this point, you cannot go wrong if you do what's right.

Life...

I am out of ideas to write on. So I am going to write about life.  Life, it's tough. When I was younger, I was dying to grow up, for what though? For responsibilities? For constant struggles? Imagine a childhood where your parents provide you with necessities and more, to the slow transition to adulthood where your parents only produce the basic need. So daily, monthly or yearly essentials are at my expense. This process has taught me that nothing good in life comes easy. It is preparing me for my future life on my own. Am I ready for it? Not by choice, but when the time comes, I've already prepared. My parents did their part to provide for me. Therefore I will do my part and make them proud. Living a good life is tough, but it is not impossible. Sometimes, I feel like I am running out of time, but my motto is, do your best and God will do the rest.

Life of the Educators

Lectures are expected to evaluate students' abilities in the classroom while planning, preparing, and delivering effective strategies for each student. Every educator should provide a lesson that focuses on the required information for the period along with a delivery plan. A teacher is like an input device for a computer therefore, a teacher is responsible for entering data into systems in many different ways because various systems input and process data differently. Teachers have expectations from the government and society to form the future leaders and from parents to educate, instil good habits and core values. Educators are essential, they are  responsible for the future of not only their county but the world.

History lessons

During this semester, I've learned so much about black history. How they were mistreated and viewed as commodities or test subjects in the lab. In 1932, 600 African American Males took part in a syphilis study. They were told that the men will be treated for syphilis however, they wanted to see the progression of untreated syphilis in black males. They were monitored and given placebos. The men started to die or experience symptoms or health problems due to a lack of proper care. This project was unethical and in 1947 the surviving participant along with the heir of those who were deceased received a $10 million out-of-court settlement. After learning this, I have a hard time trusting people in authorities.

Online Banking

Since I got online banking, I have saved so much time and energy. It is an effortless way to manage your finances without actually going to the bank. The software is advanced and secured, and all you need is a smart device and internet connection. I am able to view my account balance, pay bills and transfer funds. My past financial transaction is right at my fingertips. At this point, I only go to the bank to make deposits.

Travelling

I had forgotten what it felt like to travel. The feeling of walking barefoot on the cold ground as you go through customs. The sound of the luggage rolling on the polished floors. The flight boarding calls over the public announcement speaker in the distance as you walk to your gate. The feeling of excitement in the pit of your stomach as you walk through the terminal. The smiles from the flight attendants as they greet you upon aircraft entry. The fear as the aircraft accelerated in the air and the well-deserved naps during the journey. Finally, there is no better feeling than arriving safely at your destination.

My favourite Snack

My ideal snack of all time has to be banana fritters. If you give me a banana, I will not eat it directly but, I would use it to make some pancakes. All you will need is banana (of course), sugar, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla essence, flour, a pinch of salt and kitchen utensils. To begin, you will get a bowl and begin to mash your bananas with a fork until soft and mushy. Proceed to add the wet ingredients, such as the milk and vanilla essence, to the mashed banana and mix till combined. After, you mix the sugar, salt, spices, and flour into the wet batter in that order. Mix well to ensure there are no lumps in the mixture. Heat the pan, spray or pour cooking oil and begin frying once oil is heated. Trust me when I say that's all the snacks you will need.

Who is the Windrush generation?

After World War II, in 1945, Britain was left in a labour shortage and destruction of the barrage. As a result, The British Government sent out ads, encouraging and welcoming young West Indians from the British colonies, to migrate to the United Kingdom. Those interested would take positions for excess job vacancies and help in the rebuilding of the British nation. They were persuaded to migrate by the British Nationality Act of 1948, which entitled citizenship and the freedom of residence in the United Kingdom. Thousands of men, women and children left the Caribbean by sea and air for Britain between the late 1940s and early 1960s. Those individuals who migrated to the United Kingdom from the Caribbean during the period were called the Windrush generation. The name “Windrush” stems from the HMT Empire Windrush left the dock in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 24, 1948, and completed its eight thousand miles journey to Tilbury docks in Essex on June 22, 1948. Colin Grant classed the arrival o...

Dream house, Tenaya Darlington

I found it interesting how the author explain the similarities and differences between both houses. She did do well, that I felt as if I was in her position. I was the one who experienced the breathtaking view. The way she stared the essay giving highlights of struggles only to show appreciation in the end after the move.

How to mark a book, Mortimer Adler

Personally, this essay started out like a comparison essay, where the author was describing different types of book owners. It went on to describe why  it is important to express your thoughts through marking in the books, and proceed to explain how to do it. It is almost like the author combined the different types of essay into one essay. It was certainly informative and I will definitely use the information that I acquire.

Slice of life, Russell Baker

This easy was a describing or explaining the process of craving a turkey. At first, I was following the process, but I became lost when he mentioned wrapng the turkey in towel. I could not picture wrapping a turkey in a towel in order to cut it. I guess it was such a hard process that I could not follow. In reality the process is only hard if you have an unfit craving knife. Although it confused me a bit, It wasn't entirely bad. I loved the he incorporated jokes throughout the passage.
