Main Idea and Controlling Idea

Paragraph writing seems like a lot of work, but when you really think about it and apply what you learnt it's not that bad. A paragraph is consist of seven to eight sentences, and within those sentence, you must have a topic sentence. A topic sentence states the main idea of a paragraph. all the other sentences are to explain, describe, extend, or support the main idea in the topic sentence. More specifically, the topic sentence is made up of a main idea/ main topic and a controlling idea. The main idea/ the main topic is usually the topic of the essay. For example, 'The weather today is bad.', the main idea of that sentence would be the weather. The controlling idea on the other hand is the subtopic of the main topic. The controlling idea for the previous example would be 'bad'. Bad is the point made about the topic. This was honestly not that hard to understand because I am familiar with it. The only issue I personally have is, in some cases, I mix up the main top...

The Ugly Truth About Beauty by Dave Barry(pg. 568)

The passage "The Ugly Truth About Beauty" by Dave Barry was quite funny yet informative. The author started the introduction by engaging with his audience, making a statement and asking a question. His choice of words captured my attention and made me want to read on. The passage allowed me to view beauty from a male's point of view. I loved how the comparison he used o both males and females. I definitely did not regret reading on.

Introduction

What is an introduction? An introduction is the first paragraph of an essay.  What is the purpose of an introduction? The main purpose is to lead the readers to the thesis statement to capture their interest in reading on.  Is the introduction the most important part of an essay? Why? I think this is the most important part of an essay because it determines whether the reader is interested to read on or not. What are the elements that you would use when writing your essay? Elements of an essay: Thesis Statement Outline Introduction Body Conclusion Example of an Introduction. I feel like the world would be a better place if the production and sales of cigarettes were made illegal in Antigua and Barbuda. Don't you agree? Cigarettes are deadly and legal. Whereas cannabis can be used for medical purposes, yet it is illegal but decriminalized. I say legalize it, what do you say?

Brainstorming (Crisis)

Crisis  When I hear crisis I think about: Pandemic-  Unemployment Financial crisis Fire Natural disaster Bankruptcy Earthquake Lockdown State of emergency Increase in crime rate Starvation Family Violence Workplace deaths Grouping Natural disaster- fire, earthquake Pandemic- state of emergency, lockdown, death (can also cause financial crisis) Financial crisis- bankruptcy, unemployment, increase in crime rate, starvation I find that this exercise on brainstorming actually prepared me for writing on the topic. The most challenging thing for me was confidence in my thoughts. It was a struggle trusting that the information is correct. I was second-guessing the first thing that came to my mind. Although I know the information doesn't have to make sense the first time. I couldn't help but wanting it to be perfect. Despite my struggles, I was able to group my thoughts together which ended up making sense. I fully understand the need for brainstorming because it sums up everything th...

My Writing Experience

My writing experience is not 100%, but I try. I mainly focus on proofreading and finding different ways to enhance my writing. Writing gives me a chance to genuinely express myself since I’m socially anxious and no one can see the face behind the screen or paper. My biggest challenge with writing is not being able to fully express myself. Hopefully, after gaining some more knowledge on writing, I will be able to write with confidence and put my thoughts into words.
