Main Idea and Controlling Idea

Paragraph writing seems like a lot of work, but when you really think about it and apply what you learnt it's not that bad. A paragraph is consist of seven to eight sentences, and within those sentence, you must have a topic sentence. A topic sentence states the main idea of a paragraph. all the other sentences are to explain, describe, extend, or support the main idea in the topic sentence.

More specifically, the topic sentence is made up of a main idea/ main topic and a controlling idea. The main idea/ the main topic is usually the topic of the essay. For example, 'The weather today is bad.', the main idea of that sentence would be the weather. The controlling idea on the other hand is the subtopic of the main topic. The controlling idea for the previous example would be 'bad'. Bad is the point made about the topic.

This was honestly not that hard to understand because I am familiar with it. The only issue I personally have is, in some cases, I mix up the main topic and the controlling idea. But that's not an issue anymore, after all the exercises we did in class together.

This reading was a little hard to read. Despite that, it was informative. The story ran smoothly as it describes how the main character discovered her daughter was smoking to explain where the habit came from. I like how she included that she too was getting into the habit of smoking but stopped after she encountered a severe soar throat. Her daughter knows that smoking kills, she was what her grandfather went through but she was already addicted and hoping she can overcome the addiction before it is too late.

Introduction

What is an introduction? An introduction is the first paragraph of an essay.  What is the purpose of an introduction? The main purpose is to lead the readers to the thesis statement to capture their interest in reading on.  Is the introduction the most important part of an essay? Why? I think this is the most important part of an essay because it determines whether the reader is interested to read on or not. What are the elements that you would use when writing your essay? I feel like the world would be a better place if the production and sales of cigarettes were made illegal in Antigua and Barbuda. Don't you agree? Cigarettes are deadly and legal. Whereas cannabis can be used for medical purposes, yet it is illegal but decriminalized. I say legalize it, what do you say?

The Ugly Truth About Beauty by Dave Barry(pg. 568)

The passage "The Ugly Truth About Beauty" by Dave Barry was quite funny yet informative. The author started the introduction by engaging with his audience, making a statement and asking a question. His choice of words captured my attention and made me want to read on. The passage allowed me to view beauty from a male's point of view. I loved how the comparison he used o both males and females. I definitely did not regret reading on.
